Biography/ Professional summary

Homaira Jahan Sonom is an alumna of the Faculty of Agriculture, Sylhet Agricultural University and a development professional working at the intersection of agriculture, innovation, communication, plant protection, and regional cooperation. She currently serves as a Technical Officer at the Asia-Pacific Association of Agricultural Research Institutions (APAARI), where her work supports plant protection, phytosanitary systems, biosecurity, market access, safe agricultural trade, capacity building, and agricultural resilience across the Asia-Pacific region.

Her journey reflects courage, adaptability, and the power of stepping beyond conventional career paths. Coming from the haor region of Sunamganj, she became the first girl from her village to pursue higher education at a public university. After completing her studies at Sylhet Agricultural University, she built her career through education services, private-sector experience, agricultural development work, and international organizations including CABI and APAARI. Her professional strengths include multi-stakeholder engagement, research and innovation, problem-solving, cross-cultural communication, project management, and agricultural leadership.

Beyond technical expertise, Homaira’s story carries a strong message of self-belief, resilience, and continuous growth. Her work now connects national and regional agricultural systems, helping strengthen collaboration, evidence-based policy, plant health, trade, and sustainable agricultural development.
